Description

A #1 New York Times Bestseller

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn comes the story of Daphne Bridgerton, in the first of her beloved Regency-set novels featuring the charming, powerful Bridgerton family, now a series created by Shondaland for Netflix.

In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London, rules abound. From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to address an earl and curtsey before a prince—while other dictates of the ton are unspoken yet universally understood. A proper duke should be imperious and aloof. A young, marriageable lady should be amiable…but not too amiable.

Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter. The fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships with the most eligible young men in London. Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit. But no one truly desires her. She is simply too deuced honest for that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen.

Amiability is not a characteristic shared by Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings. Recently returned to England from abroad, he intends to shun both marriage and society—just as his callous father shunned Simon throughout his painful childhood. Yet an encounter with his best friend’s sister offers another option. If Daphne agrees to a fake courtship, Simon can deter the mamas who parade their daughters before him. Daphne, meanwhile, will see her prospects and her reputation soar.

The plan works like a charm—at first. But amid the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one certainty: love ignores every rule...

This novel includes the 2nd epilogue, a peek at the story after the story.

I wanted to read this book because of the show, but i can say even though the show is good, the book is far better. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who would love to read a good romance book.

I loved this book. There was a lot of humour in it and a lot of passion. The way the characters developed throughout the book was beautiful and I think the ending couldn’t have been better.

Bridgeton is a strange book. Its captivatingly interesting, and is witty, and cleverly written. There are some points in the book that sound rather American, but other than that, it is, as a whole, a thoroughly good book. Though to be fair, I’m a child, and it is probably not suitable for children, but I still have an opinion, and it is as well written as any adult review. Give a voice to everyone.

How wonderful to become so absorbed in a tale of pure love. Witty, humorous, happy, interesting, totally delightful. I absolutely loved it, will definitely read again, and am looking forward to the next book. I thoroughly enjoyed the adaptation on tv, which did not in any way spoil the written word.

I liked this book and read it after watching the series on Netflix. I wasn’t as enamoured with Simon and Daphne in this book but I loved it after first reading it and still like it now. It’s just that, after reading the other books in the series, I have other favourites. Definitely a wonderful welcome into the world of the Bridgertons.

Overly simplistic plot, complete lack of character development, trying to be modern regency and comes across as American. Do not waste your money.

I decided to read the book after watching Bridgerton on Netflix and was almost put off by a particularly negative review, however for 99p I decided I couldn’t go wrong. The book is very well written and easy to read, and hard to put down. It’s also quite different to the TV series it’s a slightly different story which makes it all the more worth reading. I would highly recommend, especially for someone who doesn’t read frequently I ended up looking forward to my evenings or baths just to take sometime and pick up the book.

Started reading the Bridgerton series a few year ago and couldn’t wait for the TV series! However the TV series didn’t live up to the expectations of the book, there’s obviously so much more detail in a book than a TV show This series really is worth the read, there’s so much more to each characters personality and depth to each of their stories, it’s truly one of my favourite series and would really recommend to anyone who loves a good steamy romance Following the family through each romance and watching them grow has been a pleasure and I can’t wait for it to continue on the big screen

  • Badly written; watch the TV series instead

The TV series was better – don’t waste your time on the novel. Poorly written and poorly characterised, far too dialogue-heavy (with dialogue that is nowhere near as interesting or witty as it pretends to be) and with a plot that isn’t very interesting either – not to mention Daphne rapes her husband when he’s drunk and somehow it’s all his fault??? The book is also very historically inaccurate; it reads like modern-day American characters set in a Britain that claims to be the Regency Era but isn’t, and feels too American for it to be so. Also some of the language is far too much modern American English to make this a convincing English historical novel, e.g. at one point the author writes that Simon “sits on his fanny” which to a British reader is confusing as over here “fanny” means “vagina”, rather than “bottom”. And I don’t think the term “trousseau” appeared in the English language until the mid-1800s – which is after the Regency period. On the flip side, it’s encouraging to know that anyone can write a novel and have it sell, so we should all thank the author for that. But if you want a decent Regency romance, read some Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer instead.
